Remember that everything you eat influences how your skin looks, it is essential to know the foods that affect it negatively to take care of our skin and our health, some of them are:
To take care of our skin we must avoid sugars and refined carbohydrates:
They can increase sebum production and propitiate the development of acne, some are: refined wheat flour, white sugar, white rice, white bread, cookies, sugary cereals.
Fried foods and trans fats:
These can contribute to inflammation and affect skin elasticity, some examples are: commercial bakery products (cookies, cakes, buns), processed foods and snack foods (packaged potato chips, pretzels), margarine and baked goods, fast food and restaurant fried foods, prepared and frozen meals, industrial cake and pie toppings
Dairy products:
Some people are sensitive to dairy, and its consumption may be linked to skin problems such as acne. milk, stimulates insulin production.
Foods with a high glycemic index:
They can trigger insulin spikes, affecting skin health. The glycemic index (GI) is a measure of how foods affect blood sugar levels. High GI foods raise glucose levels quickly, while low GI foods raise glucose levels more gradually, affecting energy and metabolic health.
Insulin, a hormone that facilitates cellular uptake of glucose, can negatively impact skin health when released in excess. Elevated insulin contributes to overall inflammation, causing skin problems such as acne, premature aging and sensitivity. It also stimulates sebum production, leading to clogged pores and acne breakouts. High blood glucose can also generate advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which degrade collagen and elastin, accelerating skin aging.
Alcohol and caffeine in excess:
Caffeine, being diuretic, dehydrates the skin, causing dullness and accentuating fine lines. It stimulates the nervous system, increasing anxiety and stress, negatively impacting skin health and worsening acne. Consumption before going to sleep affects sleep, relating it to dark circles under the eyes and premature aging.
Alcohol affects skin hydration, causing dryness and flaking. It causes inflammation, manifested in redness and swelling, aggravating conditions such as acne and rosacea. It dilates blood vessels, causing redness and dilated veins, and increases free radicals, accelerating skin aging.
Foods high in sodium:
Excess sodium can trigger water retention, leading to facial puffiness. The resulting dehydration can cause dryness and flaking. In addition, sodium-induced inflammation can contribute to skin problems such as acne and premature aging.
Fast and processed foods:
They contain additives and unhealthy fats that negatively affect the skin.
Inflammatory fats and oils:
Omega-6 fatty acids, in excess of omega-3s, can cause inflammation. Maintaining an essential balance is crucial, as disproportionate modern diets contribute to chronic inflammation, associated with disease and skin problems. It is suggested to increase foods rich in omega-3s such as fatty fish, nuts and flaxseeds and reduce excessive sources of omega-6s such as refined vegetable oils, some oils to avoid are: canola oil, rapeseed oil, and soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, safflower oil and peanut oil.
Foods with gluten if you are sensitive:
For some people with gluten sensitivity, consuming gluten can affect the skin.
Maintaining a balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats, along with proper hydration, will help you have healthier skin.
