Let's start with the modern definition of cosmetics, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it encompasses anything that is "rubbed, poured, sprayed, or sprayed on, put on, or otherwise applied to the human body to cleanse, beautify, enhance its attractiveness, or alter its appearance." According to this definition, we have been altering our skin with paints and oils and dabbling in art and artifice since the Ice Age.

The term "cosmetic" derives from the Greek "kosmetikos," meaning "adornment." Since ancient times, people have used various natural materials to beautify themselves, such as clay, plants, minerals and oils. In Ancient Egypt, for example, makeup was an integral part of daily life, with the use of natural pigments such as iron oxide and khol.

Today, cosmetics encompass a wide range of products, from makeup and skin care to fragrances and hair care products. These products are used not only to beautify, but also to moisturize, protect and improve the health of skin and hair.

The cosmetics industry has experienced significant growth in recent decades, with the development of new products and technologies. Advances in science and research have enabled the creation of more effective and safer products, with active ingredients that offer additional benefits for skin and hair.

On the other hand, makeup is the art of beautifying the face, taking into account the physiognomy of each person in order to highlight their most beautiful features. The word maquillage appeared in the French theaters of the 19th century, to refer to the paint that was put on the face of the actors. The term is composed of "maquille", which means "to make up" and the suffix "-age", which denotes action or result.

It is also a form of personal and artistic expression that has existed throughout human history. It refers to the use of cosmetic products to enhance or alter a person's physical appearance, including the face, eyes, lips and nails. In addition to its aesthetic function, makeup can also have cultural, social and emotional significance in different contexts and eras.

Makeup is not only about covering imperfections or highlighting facial features, but can also be a tool for expressing individuality, creativity and identity. For many people, applying makeup is an art form and an opportunity to explore different styles and trends.

In addition to its aesthetic appearance, makeup can also have an impact on a person's self-esteem and confidence. Feeling good about themselves, many people find empowerment through makeup and use it as a form of self-expression and to enhance their natural beauty.

However, it is also important to keep in mind that makeup is not a necessity for everyone and that true beauty lies in confidence and authenticity. Makeup can be a powerful tool, but it does not define a person's value.
