Asian pop culture has left an indelible mark on the world of makeup, influencing global trends and challenging beauty standards. From South Korea to Japan, Asia has pioneered unique styles that have captivated audiences around the world.

With the rise of the K-pop phenomenon and the Korean wave, Korean makeup has gained international recognition for its focus on radiant, natural skin. The crystal skin "look," characterized by a luminous and translucent complexion, has become an aspirational beauty standard. In addition, the "aegyo-sal" (fake eye bags) trend has gained popularity, adding a youthful and flirtatious touch to the look.

Other Korean makeup techniques include:

  • Straight eyebrows: Instead of arched eyebrows, straight eyebrows are trending in Korean makeup. They are kept natural and slightly filled in to softly frame the face.

  • Biting lips: Known as "gradient lips," this style involves applying color to the center of the lips and blending it outward to create a soft, bitten lip effect.

  • Inverted cat eyes: Instead of the classic winged eyeliner, this technique involves applying eyeliner to the lower waterline and extending it slightly outward to open and enlarge the eyes.

  • Blush under the eyes: Apply blush under the eyes to create a youthful, healthy look.

  • Using makeup pads: Makeup pads are popular for applying foundation and other products evenly and lightly, achieving a natural, fresh finish.

Japanese pop culture has influenced makeup in a variety of ways. The "gyaru" style, known for its large, dramatic eyes, has been an iconic trend in Japanese fashion and makeup. Japanese makeup techniques are characterized by their focus on simplicity, subtlety and natural beauty. It seeks to highlight each person's individuality and enhance their unique beauty rather than completely transforming it.

The influence of Asian makeup on global culture has been evident in the adoption of techniques and products by influencers and makeup enthusiasts around the world. The popularity of the 10-step skincare routine, originating in South Korea, has also led to an increase in demand for Asian beauty products.

In addition, the proliferation of makeup tutorials on platforms such as TickTock and Instagram has facilitated the exchange of ideas and techniques between people from different cultures and countries. This has allowed Asian makeup to transcend borders.
