Marilyn Monroe Makeup

Makeup and art are closely related, as both have been means of creative and cultural expression and a way to beautify, transform and communicate aesthetic and symbolic messages.

As we saw in previous blogs, in ancient civilizations, such as the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, makeup was associated with social status and was used to highlight beauty and express cultural and religious identity.

During the Renaissance, makeup was employed in a more subtle and refined way, seeking to create the appearance of flawless and natural skin.

In the 20th century, makeup became a form of artistic expression and liberation, especially in movements such as surrealism and pop art.

The use of makeup as a form of artistic expression has complemented numerous works of art and paintings throughout history to show a better representation of the character portrayed, these are some of them:

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, Makeup
  • "Marilyn Monroe" (1962) by Andy Warhol: Warhol captured the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe with her signature glamorous makeup, highlighting her role as an icon of popular culture and celebrity.

  • "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I" (1907) by Gustav Klimt: In this painting, Adele Bloch-Bauer, a Viennese socialite, is depicted with elaborate makeup and exquisite jewelry. Her lips are painted deep red, her eyes are framed by dark eyeliner and her cheeks have a soft blush. The makeup highlights her beauty and elegance, reflecting her social status and sophistication.

  • "Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace" (1940) by Frida Kahlo: In this self-portrait, Frida Kahlo depicts herself with distinctive makeup that includes thick, defined eyebrows, intense red lips and a pale complexion. The makeup reflects her unique identity and personal style, adding an element of artistic expression to the work.

Here are some artistic makeup collaborations:

Today, makeup remains an art form that transcends cultural and social boundaries.
