The history of eyelashes, mascara or mascara, dates back to ancient times. In ancient Mesopotamia, ointments were used to darken the eyelashes and enhance the beauty of the eyes. The Egyptians also applied a mixture of minerals and oils to enhance their eyelashes and darken them.

In 19th century Europe, the first forms of mascara emerged, consisting of mixtures of beeswax and charcoal to darken the lashes. However, it was not until the end of the 19th century that the French chemist Eugene Rimmel created the first modern version of eyelash mascara, using vaseline and dark pigments, and in 1834, founded the Rimmel company, which specialized in the production of cosmetic products.

In the 20th century, with the rise of the cosmetics industry, the eyelash quickly became popular. Maybelline launched its iconic eyelash in 1917 this product was called "Maybelline Cake Mascara" and was created by chemist Thomas Lyle Williams. The original formula came in the form of a compact pastille that was applied by moistening it with a special brush before using it on the eyelashes.

Max Factor's first mascara was launched in 1914 and was called "Mascara", it was composed of a mixture of beeswax and black pigments. The first mascara by Helena Rubinstein, known as the "Queen of Cosmetics", was launched in 1908. This pioneer of the cosmetics industry developed a formula based on petroleum jelly and dark pigments to enhance eyelashes and bring out the beauty of the eyes. In the 1950s, American actress Marilyn Monroe contributed to the popularity of mascara, making it a must-have in a woman's makeup kit.

Over the following decades, mascara technology and formulas evolved, offering a variety of options, such as lengthening, volume, varied brushes, water resistance and hypoallergenic formulas. Today, mascara is a staple in many people's makeup routine, with a wide range of options available on the market to meet individual needs and preferences.
