In Ancient Rome, the use of cosmetics and makeup was very important and reflected the importance given to beauty in that society. Both men and women were interested in makeup and obsessed with its use, which led to an increase in the production and distribution of cosmetics.
During the Roman Empire, the use of cosmetics and makeup spread from Egypt to Greece and eventually to Rome. It was common for Roman merchants to return from the East with large shipments of perfumes and beauty items made from gypsum, chalk, fava bean flour and calcium carbonate and lead. They even used a mixed paste containing crushed flies and ants' eggs to make up their eyes. They also popularized the use of "Kohl", a powder cosmetic of Egyptian origin that darkened the eyes and protected them from the sun.
In Ancient Rome, makeup was made using a variety of natural ingredients. Some of the common ingredients included white lead, which was used as a base to lighten the skin and create an even canvas for makeup. Calcium carbonate was also used as a face powder to give a softer, matte look. Red and yellow ochre were used as blushers to highlight the cheeks, while henna was used to dye hair and eyebrows. In addition, antimony sulfide was used as eyeliner to create a smoky effect.

Makeup in ancient Rome used to be very striking. Women used substances such as plaster and flour to create a pale complexion and wore an unibrow, sometimes made with animal hair. They also used red and black pigments on their lips and cheeks.
At that time, both hairstyle and makeup were taken care of to the maximum, especially in social events. The beauty canon of the time was a woman with white skin and flushed cheeks. White skin was associated with nobility and distinction, in contrast to dark-skinned or sunburned women who worked in the fields. In addition, substances such as soot were used to paint the eyes and eyebrows.
