The 1990s were a time of transition and diversity in fashion, culture and makeup. This decade, marked by the influence of grunge music, the pop explosion and the rise of supermodels, left its mark on beauty trends.
One of the most distinctive trends of the 1990s was the emphasis on dark lips. Deep shades of brown, red wine and burgundy became the choice of many women. This style contrasted with the more nude and natural eye profile, where neutral and earth tone eyeshadows were popular. The combination of dark lips and soft eyes was emblematic of the decade's aesthetic.
Unlike the defined, thick brows of the '80s, brows in the '90s took a more natural approach. Supermodels like Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford pioneered thinner, arched brows, giving way to a softer, unkempt look.
Lips with a glossy finish were a key element of 1990s makeup. Glosses in sheer, pink and peach shades were applied generously for a juicy, voluminous lip effect. This style was a response to the matte of the 1980s and reflected a renewed appreciation for shine and freshness.
Smoky eyes were also a prominent feature. This makeup style was achieved by applying eye shadows in dark shades, such as black, gray and brown, blending them skillfully to create a smoky, seductive effect. Eyeliner, although less dramatic than in previous decades, was still essential. The simple, thin application of eyeliner emphasized the natural shape of the eye.

Inspired by the grunge movement in music and fashion, makeup took a more relaxed and casual approach. Skin maintained its natural look, with an emphasis on freshness and luminosity. Imperfections were not hidden, but embraced as part of authenticity.
The 1990s saw the launch of innovative products that have become makeup staples. Lipsticks in retractable format and automatic eyeliners made application easier. In addition, the introduction of products with lighter, less pigmented formulas reflected the trend toward a more natural look.
Supermodels of the era, such as Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Tyra Banks, had a major influence on makeup trends. Their fresh and sophisticated looks were admired and replicated around the world. In addition, iconic musical artists like the Spice Girls and Gwen Stefani also left their mark on the 90's aesthetic.
