In ancient Mesopotamia, which encompassed the present-day region of Iraq, Syria and parts of Iran, makeup was also used.

In Mesopotamia, makeup was mainly applied to the eyes and lips. The eyes were considered an important part of the face and were given special attention. They used soot, antimony or kohl to outline the eyes, similar to the Egyptian practice, and shadows of colors such as blue (lapis lazuli), green or black to decorate the eyelids.

Mesopotamian women wore bleached skin and also used other products to beautify themselves, such as aromatic oils and natural pigments to highlight the cheeks and lipstick to color the lips. These products were made from natural ingredients, such as minerals and plants.

Makeup in Mesopotamia was not only used for aesthetic reasons, but also had religious significance. It was believed that makeup helped to establish a connection with the gods and to obtain their help. Therefore, its application was part of religious rituals and ceremonies.
