Face contouring is a makeup technique that has gained popularity in recent years, thanks to its ability to highlight and define facial features in a customized way. It is based on the idea of creating shadows and highlights to sculpt the face and enhance its appearance. However, it is important to understand that not all faces are the same, so the contouring approach must be tailored to each person's facial shape and structure.
First, it is crucial to identify your face shape to determine which areas need to be highlighted and which need to be minimized. Common face shapes include round, oval, square, triangular and heart.
For a round face, the main goal is to create the illusion of more angular and defined lines. This is achieved by applying a darker shade on the sides of the forehead, under the cheekbones and along the jawline, while applying a lighter shade in the center of the forehead, under the eyes and in the center of the chin to highlight these areas.

On the other hand, oval faces are often considered the most balanced, so contouring focuses on enhancing the natural features without altering the shape of the face too much. Here, dark shades can be applied slightly under the cheekbones and along the jawline to add dimension, while a lighter shade is used on the center of the forehead, bridge of the nose and Cupid's bow for highlighting.

Square faces have prominent angles, so the goal of contouring is to soften these lines and create a softer appearance. This is achieved by applying a dark tone along the sides of the forehead and jawline to minimize the appearance of width, and a lighter tone in the center of the forehead and cheekbones to highlight.

On triangular faces, where the forehead is wider than the jawline, contouring focuses on balancing these proportions. Here, a darker shade is applied to the sides of the forehead and jawline to soften the angles, and a lighter shade is applied to the center of the forehead and cheekbones to create a lifting effect.

Finally, on heart-shaped faces, with a wide forehead and prominent cheekbones that taper toward the chin, contouring focuses on softening the forehead and highlighting the chin. This is achieved by applying a dark shade on the sides of the forehead and cheekbones, and a lighter shade on the jawline and center of the forehead to create a balancing effect.
