The toxicity of an ingredient may depend on concentration and exposure, not all ingredients are necessarily harmful in all cosmetic formulations but identifying toxic ingredients in moisturizers is important.
Some cosmetic names associated with substances of concern include:
Parabens: Preservatives in cosmetics; some studies suggest possible hormonal risk and premature aging.
Phthalates: Used in fragrances and plastics; some may affect the hormonal system and cause infertility, obesity, asthma, allergies or breast cancer.
Formaldehyde: Preservative and disinfectant, potentially irritating and carcinogenic.
Synthetic fragrances: May contain phthalates and trigger allergies.
Diethanolamine (DEA): Emulsifier, may cause allergy, itching, liver and kidney damage, with potential carcinogenic risk.

Mercury: Present in some skin whitening products, can affect the brain, nervous system and kidneys and sometimes cause permanent damage and even death.
